Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant
The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), or the “A-Plant,” played a significant part in the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)’s efforts to expand the country’s atomic energy program.
On August 12, 1952, Pike County, Ohio was announced as the location for a new gaseous diffusion plant. A-Plant contributed to national defense and nuclear energy—much like sites in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Paducah, Kentucky.
The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant Virtual Museum offers a virtual look into the preserved information, data, photos, films, and videos—taking a deep dive into A-Plant’s history, workers, processes, and their contributions during the Cold War era.
