The 5th Annual National Day of Remembrance, honoring nuclear and uranium workers, has been introduced in the US Senate. Below is the text from a press release from Senator Mark Udall. Senator Lamar Alexander also co-sponsored the resolution and his press release can be found here.
Senators Mark Udall (D-Colo.) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) introduced a bipartisan resolution today designating October 30 as a national day of remembrance for the nuclear weapons program workers. The resolution recognizes the sacrifices these workers made during the Cold War and their efforts to strengthen our national security.
“Throughout the Cold War, tens of thousands of Coloradans worked in uranium mines and nuclear-weapons facilities — around 40,000 at Rocky Flats alone — putting themselves in harm’s way to protect our country and strengthen our national security,” Udall said. “I am honored to join with Sen. Alexander to introduce this bipartisan resolution to remember our nuclear weapons workers and the sacrifices they made in service of our country. We must do everything we can to ensure these patriots receive the care and compensation they deserve.”
“In Tennessee, more than 14,000 workers have made claims for compensation, many of whom worked countless hours with hazardous materials to build our country’s nuclear deterrent,” Alexander said. “Many Americans labored behind the scenes, and Tennesseans – like those from Anderson and Roane counties, for example – filed more claims than any other state. It’s these workers, and those all around the country, whose sacrifice we seek to honor with this day of remembrance.”
Congress has passed resolutions marking a national day of remembrance for nuclear weapons program workers since 2009.
