Bipartisan legislators have joined together to reintroduce an act to restart and expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). Senators from New Mexico, Arizona and Missouri support the Radiation Exposure Compensation Reauthorization Act. This new act offers Congress an opportunity to revive and expand RECA which would provide compensation to citizens exposed to toxic radiation, often called downwinders.
This RECA reauthorization opportunity brings a bit of hope to downwinder and uranium worker communities in New Mexico, Arizona and Missouri. If Congress passes the RECA reauthorization, then downwinders and workers who may have become ill due to radiation exposure from nuclear testing could see their situations acknowledged by the U.S. government. Cold War Patriots advocates for nuclear weapons and uranium workers to experience the benefits they earned, including RECA.
