Authorization for the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) expired in June 2024, but the calls to reauthorize and expand it continue. Navajo Nation representatives and other activist groups are headed to Capitol Hill to request lawmakers reauthorize and expand RECA. Communities downwind of nuclear weapons testing sites who were exposed to toxic radiation used RECA to get necessary medical treatment. Tribal communities made up about 12% of RECA claims in its 30-year lifetime. Advocates for RECA’s reauthorization, like the Navajo Nation, will march on the Capitol on September 24, 2024.
