Utah citizens downwind of nuclear weapons testing are urging their elected Congressmembers to revive the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). RECA, a federal program that offered compensation to those diagnosed with certain cancers from specific downwinder communities, expired in June 2024 when Congress did not extend it.

Congress can consider a bill that would bring RECA back and expand it to more communities impacted by nuclear weapons testing. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Reauthorization Act bill passed in the Senate earlier this year but would need to pass in the House to be considered for a full vote. An alliance of concerned citizens, downwinders, survivors, physicians and environmental stewards signed a letter to Utah legislators urging them to act.

An opportunity exists for RECA to be reinstated and expanded, and Utahans are sounding the call. To read more about how expanding RECA could help downwinder communities in Utah and beyond, click here.
