In this article, Joseph Sorrentino illustrates the negative consequences of uranium mining on miners’ health that have come to light only years later. Uranium mining and milling was a part of the larger Cold War effort, Sorrentino explains. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), the bill that compensates uranium miners, millers and transports, only includes workers who worked before 1971. Last year, New Mexico legislators, Sen. Tom Udall, Sen. Martin Heinrich and Rep. Ben Ray Luján spearheaded bills to amend RECA to include post-1971 workers. To read the full article, click here.
