Description:

The Burlington Atomic Energy Commission Plant–Former Worker Program (BAECP–FWP) is a medical screening program being carried out by the University of Iowa College of Public Health and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In 1993, Congress passed Public Law 102-484. Section 3162 of this law required DOE, formerly known as the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), to screen for occupational health conditions among former employees who may be at risk forsuch health problemsas a result of their employment at DOE sites, including a subset of the workforce at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAP) near Burlington. The DOE contracted with the University of Iowa in August 2000 to carry out this project in Iowa.

The goal of the project is to identify and locate those individuals who were employed by the AEC at IAAP in order to subsequently offer them medical screenings and assist in the process of filing relevant claims under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program or state compensation program.
