The seventh stop on our “Road Trip Through the Atomic Age” took Cold War Patriots members and guests deep into the heart of Paducah, Kentucky, for an exclusive ride-along tour of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP). Led by knowledgeable U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) professionals who work on-site, the guided bus tour offered a rare glimpse into one of America’s most significant Cold War-era uranium enrichment facilities. Before entering the U.S. DOE site, all attendees adhered to strict safety protocols, underscoring the importance of security and respect for the plant’s ongoing operations.
Throughout the tour, a small group of Cold War Patriots members and guests learned about PGDP’s rich history, Paducah’s role as a “secret city,” and its vital contributions to the nation’s Cold War efforts. Our members and guests watched high-quality videos of PGDP from the 1950s and 1960s, featuring scenes of workers during plant operations, the water tower, and building demolitions. The experience was further enriched by a behind-the-scenes look at current operations, revealing how PGDP continues to uphold America’s legacy of nuclear science while pushing innovation forward. This stop not only honored the plant’s historical significance but also highlighted its continued relevance in shaping the future of energy and technology.
Below are photos of Cold War Patriots members enjoying the experience.
